Day 4: Time to reach my goals

Goals are a funny thing. Some people cast them to the side, saying they’re too busy to write down silly things. Other people live by their goals, setting daily ones to make sure they stay on task. I fall into the latter group.

When I was 12, my parents signed me up for Doug Bruno’s [I love it I love it I love it] basketball camp because I loved the sport, you got free t-shirts with your name on them, and I had a weekend to kill. The camp was amazing [I got a medal for most improved] not because of the basketball skills I learned, but because of one thing Doug Bruno taught us: Write down your goals.

He told us to go home and write down everything you wanted to accomplish in the next 6 months. Since the summer I was 12, I have always had a list of goals I want to accomplish written down and stowed away. 6 months ago I typed up a list of goals I wanted to reach by the end of the year, taping them up by my bed. Some goals are monetary, some personal-growth, some travel, some career. And lo and behold, I have reached almost all of them in the time frame I’ve given myself.

Coincidence? Not even close.

When you write your goals down, your subconscious mind starts searching for ways to accomplish them. Even if you don’t completely complete them, you’re probably a lot closer to reaching them than you would be otherwise.

Some of my goals and their progress since I set them:
·         Save 11K by the end of the year [already surpassed that amount a month ago]
·         Train for and complete a half marathon [Chicago Half Marathon July 22. Ran it in 2 hours and 27 minutes]
·         See Mount Rushmore [Driving there in a little under 3 weeks]
·         Fly on a plane for the first time [Went to L.A. in October, and going back in a few weeks]
·         Find a purposeful career [I’ve found that I want to be a full-time author. So technically I found it. Now for my next set of goals, I need to define that I want to be employed with my purposeful career]
·         Work on me [This probably should have been a little more specific but I have done nothing but constantly read and listen to books on self-growth, goals-setting, life improvement and more. Thank you to Jim Rohn, Susan Jeffers and Tony Robbins for leading me down a path of reflection and self-discovery]

All I need is the continuation of time; time to complete the goals I have set and time to write out new ones to reach.
